ON-DEMAND WEBINAR

The global iron and steel industry, just like every other industry, is facing the tremendous challenge to reduce the carbon footprint of its operations. At the same time, it is wrestling with the availability of high-grade iron ore suitable for the direct reduction (DR) processes. According to the latest figures from two major processors, only 10 - 20% of the ore available today can be used to produce pellets for DR shaft furnaces. Metso Outotec offers several proven technologies that play an important role in the transition toward carbon neutrality and enable our customers to reduce their emissions in the ironmaking value chain. We will be happy to share insights on our solutions portfolio supporting reduction of energy consumption and emissions, especially the hydrogen-based CircoredTM direct reduction process, which has been developed already in the early 1990s and now updated with additional features.

CircoredTM process in brief:

  • Used for the direct reduction of iron oxide fines in fluidized beds, avoiding the need of energy intensive and costly agglomeration
  • Using hydrogen as single reducing agent, which can be produced from any source
  • Final product can be zero-carbon HBI or DRI, which has been used successfully in EAFs for steelmaking
  • Proven in an industrial-scale demo plant in Trinidad
