The Millennium Technology Prize is Finland's recognition for innovators that aim to improve quality of life and bring technology closer to people. This one million euro prize, the world's largest technology prize, will be awarded this year to Professor Shuji Nakamura, as announced in June by the Millennium Prize Foundation in Espoo.
Professor Nakamura has developed a new, revolutionary source of light - bright-blue, green and white LEDs and a blue laser. The technology is used in several applications which improve the quality of human life.
The Millennium Technology Prize has been established to steer the course of technological development to a more humane direction. New technology is required to respond to such global challenges as the lack of clean water, the threat of climate change and the sufficiency of energy. All these issues are close to Outokumpu's values and fit particularly well with Outokumpu Technology. Outokumpu is one of the founding members of the Millennium Prize and a Corporate Partner sponsoring this award.
Outokumpu Technology is a leading mine-to-metal chain supplier committed to leading change rather than to follow it. With innovative technologies it strives to be a thought-leader and forerunner in its field.
