NCC’s original Svedala H6000 cone crusher restored to its former glory

A rather worn H6000 cone crusher at NCC Södra Sandby’s aggregates production site had seen its best days and could no longer keep up with production. Thanks to a thorough refresh and new improved Contender™ Series parts, the crusher was given a new, more efficient life for years ahead.

Key producer of construction materials

NCC is one of the largest construction and civil engineering companies in northern Europe. One of the company’s divisions is primarily focused on producing aggregates such as sand, gravel, and crushed rock. NCC extracts, processes, and sells around 15 million tonnes of aggregates annually to various customers, most of whom are in the building and construction industry.

One of the company’s production sites, NCC Södra Sandby near the city of Lund in southern Sweden, is an aggregates plant that has been operational for decades. The site employs around 40 people, including the staff of the asphalt plant operating in the same premises.

Various grades of aggregates are crushed and screened at the NCC Södra Sandby site. The end products, that are both used in NCC’s own construction projects as well as sold to external customers, consist of numerous grades of sand, gravel, crushed stone, and fill. In total, around one million tonnes of different aggregates are produced in Södra Sandby plant every year.

How to keep pace with the production demands?

NCC Södra Sandby reached out to Metso Outotec because one of the production plant’s tertiary crushers, a Svedala H6000*, had worn out and could no longer perform as efficiently as required to keep pace with the demanding production requirements.

"We were looking for reliability but preferred a more economical solution than buying a new crusher", says David Lindström, Supervisor, NCC Södra Sandby.

Initially, NCC Södra Sandby considered revitalizing the old crusher by replacing only the lower frame and interior. However, after an analysis, Metso Outotec crushing experts proposed a more extensive refresh to restore the Svedala H6000 cone crusher to its former glory and beyond.

"In the end, it came down to changing all the most important parts of the crusher. In addition to the lower frame, many components were replaced with new and improved ones, such as the upper frame, main shaft and cone, among others", explains Christer Kohle, Sales Manager, Metso Outotec.

New advanced crusher parts

Regarding the upper frame, the top shell provided had a new design aimed at protecting the arms from wear, giving the component an improved lifespan. The arms themselves were also shaped to give better fatigue resistance.

Another enhanced part included in the rebuild was a specially designed spider bushing, made from heavy duty materials and alloys meant to deliver longer life than traditional iron bushings, especially in abrasive applications. The longer life of the bushing provides sustainability benefits, by reducing the frequency of part change-outs.

An enhanced dust seal ring was also provided, made from a compressed laminated wood that offers several advantages over the original seal. The enhanced design results in much less wear on mating steel parts as well as less surface contamination from dust and particles. Furthermore, the seal is corrosion and chemical resistant, offering good temperature stability and excellent electrical insulation

"All the parts offered in the rebuild were from Contender™ Series premium parts line, designed to fit and function with non-Metso Outotec crushers. The Contender™ Series range includes all the needed service, maintenance and capital parts for multiple crusher brands and models", Christer Kohle says.

The Contender™ Series parts are developed with quality suppliers and materials, ensuring that the highest standards and the strictest tolerances are met.

Full production after a short run-in

Metso Outotec offered a package of carefully selected parts and personnel to perform the crusher rebuild.

"The project went smoothly since the changes were done during the summer break. We were very satisfied as we had full production after a short run-in of the crusher. The performance is the same as before, but the reliability has increased", describes Magnus Klinte, Supervisor, NCC Södra Sandby.

"NCC Södra Sandby and Metso Outotec worked well together. We were able to keep our promises regarding the delivery times and the project stayed within the agreed budget", concludes Christer Kohle, Sales Manager, Metso Outotec
