The agile Lokotrack ST2.3 mobile screener consumes only as much diesel as a normal car

It is no wonder that J. Koskenmäki Oy, an expert in machine contracting and property management from Hämeenlinna, is happy with the 17-ton powerhouse the company acquired last fall.

“We subjected the screen to a four-week test during which we screened fairly coarse rock material and we were impressed with what it could do. The Lokotrack ST2.3 is our first machine made by Metso, but it has to be said it was quite a safe option for us. After all, Metso’s technical support and maintenance are close to us in Tampere,” says managing director Jouni Koskenmäki, listing the company’s selection criteria.

Soil material recycling in Hattula

The new ST2.3 mobile screen is for the most part stationed at the Rahkoila clean fill dump site in Hattula. There, J. Koskenmäki processes different soil materials, recycled concrete, twigs, stumps, and sometimes also crushed stone.

The primary task of the ST2.3 is to remove any rocks and roots from excavated land material for soil production. The pure and screened soil is delivered to municipalities, parishes, and private consumers.

In addition to soil, the ST2.3 has already separated fines from recycled concrete and also screened pre-crushed stone.

Thousand cubic meters of soil during fall rains

Despite last fall’s rains, the Lokotrack ST2.3 has been busy in Rahkoila, screening soil for roughly ten hours a day, day in day out. It produced roughly one thousand cubic meters of pure screened soil in just a couple of months before the winter break. 

Excavator operator Stig Johansson has quickly become a skilled screen operator.

“The ST2.3 sure is easy to use, as the Metso IC™ process control display shows all key information and adjustments in Finnish. The quiet machine can be operated for three days on a single tankful of fuel, with its average fuel economy being close to seven liters per hour,” Johansson says.

“We are using a mesh size of 40 mm on the upper deck and 20 mm on the lower deck. We have also tested perforated plates on the upper deck.”

The last screening of the season in December

Koskenmäki’s ST2.3 showed its abilities in soil screening as late as in early December, when the ground was already covered with snow and relative humidity was at its peak.

The stepless adjustment of the belt feeder speed and the screen stroke of up to 13 mm ensured that soil could also be screened when wet, even more slowly than dry soil. What’s more, the steel meshes also remained clean.

The Lokotrack screen will next be started in Rahkoila in spring, when the dumping site comes back to life. 

“Being fairly small and easy to transport on a truck bed, ST2.3 is also available for leasing,” Jouni Koskenmäki says.
