Santeri Kangas started at Metso Outotec as a Summer Trainee and is currently working as a Project Manager in Logistics, Integration Management Office. During his time at the company, he has also spent a month in Shanghai, participating in a job rotation with a Chinese colleague. We interviewed Santeri about his journey at the company.

When did you start at Metso Outotec and in which position?

I joined Outotec in 2017, as a summer trainee in Global Sales Support. As a Sales Support trainee, I was in charge of quotations and sales orders to market areas. I worked closely together with market areas and coordinated everything between them and internal stakeholders, such as our technical support, procurement, pricing and logistics.

What kind of other roles have you had?

After the traineeship, I was offered to continue as a Sales Support Specialist. The tasks remained similar, but I was given more responsibility: for example, I was now in charge of my own market areas. After a while I applied to a role of Senior Sales Support Specialist and started working with more complex cases. Also, I was now responsible for cases around specific technologies. During my time in Sales Support, I learned a lot about international business, cultural differences, supply chain management, as well as different technologies and systems.

Recently, after the merger of Metso Outotec, I was asked to join the Customer Logistics, Integration Management Organization team. I became a Project Manager. The goal of this role is to integrate the systems and processes of both Metso and Outotec, inside customer logistics.

What is the best thing about having a career in Metso Outotec?

There is a large variety of different career paths. I like it that we have so many different opportunities inside the company, and they are not tied to a country or business unit. Additionally, I have really enjoyed meeting people from all over the world in person and this way creating stronger bonds with them. The best part of my job is definitely the people I work with: we have an encouraging atmosphere and there is always someone ready to support, if needed. I also really like the attitude of getting things done and the overall mindset to develop the company even further.

What are your biggest career achievements?

As my achievements, I would name the promotion to my current position, as well as being chosen for job rotation in Shanghai. During my time at Sales Support, I spent 2 weeks in Shanghai assisting market area colleagues with their quotation and order management tasks. After those weeks, my colleague from Shanghai came to Finland and I showed her how my daily work looked like. The 4 weeks of job shadowing was a unique experience and I feel that everyone who took part got a lot of good experience out of it.

What do you do in your spare time?

Outside work, you can usually find me at the gym or doing other out- and indoor sports activities. Last summer I also started playing golf, but that still needs a lot of practice and inner patience.  In addition, I’m a passionate hockey fan and during the winter, my evenings often include ice hockey games or complex board games with friends.

What is your motto in life?

Outside your comfort zone it might be challenging, but it’s where you evolve.
