From Summer Trainee in manufacturing to Logistics Manager

During his five years at Metso Outotec, Arttu Saari has had lots of career development opportunities and he has changed positions many times. He started as a Summer Trainee in the production site and is now a Logistics Manager, leading a team of 17 Logistics Coordinators. Each position along the way has taught Arttu new skills and he has been able to complement these learnings by continuing studies alongside working.

When did you start at Metso Outotec and in which position?

Back in 2017 I got my first summer trainee position from Metso Outotec. It was my first year at university and the position that I got was blue-collar worker in Tampere Lokotrack production site. Main tasks were packaging and sending Lokotrack crushers to customers. Part of the summer I was also in the production line assembling those crushers. During the summer I learned a lot about our products and processes.

What kind of roles have you had since then?

In 2018 my manager from the previous summer called me and asked me to do my bachelor’s thesis about the layout change of the packaging department where I worked at the summer. After finalizing my thesis, I worked as a Development Engineer Trainee and had a chance to create the changes planned in my theses in practice. One of the biggest learnings from this position was how to sell my ideas to others.

I like that we are a global company full of professionals in almost every possible field of science. There is a possibility to develop yourself in almost any direction inside the company.

In 2019 I started as a Logistics Trainee which was my first actual office position where I wasn’t in the production site at all. The daily work was mainly about taking care of the logistics of spare parts and consumables and serving customers mainly in distant countries. What I enjoyed in this position was that I had my own country responsibilities, which means I took care of the customers in those countries. After starting my master’s degree in 2020 I soon started working full-time, as a Logistics Coordinator. I really liked working and studying at the same time as they complemented each other.

In 2021 I moved from an operative position to a supporting position of the same processes, when I became a Warehouse Process Specialist. Some of my daily tasks included managing warehouses together with the warehouse managers, developing outbound processes and monitoring and analyzing KPIs. At the end of the year, my old manager from logistics team was about to leave the company. I had just finished my master’s degree and felt that I had enough experience from the operations and organization that I applied to that Logistics Manager position. I now lead a team of 17 Logistics Coordinators and take care of inbound and outbound logistics of our main spare part warehouse.

Best feeling is to see some improvement implementation having a positive effect on operations. I also really like helping my team members to be best versions of themselves and working efficiently.

What is it that you most like about your job? What do you like about Metso Outotec as an employer?

The best thing on my current job is to see that I can really affect our daily operations. My decisions really play key role in our daily work. Best feeling is to see some improvement implementation having a positive effect on operations. I also really like helping my team members to be best versions of themselves and working efficiently.

In Metso Outotec, I like that we are a global company full of professionals in almost every possible field of science. There is a possibility to develop yourself in almost any direction inside the company.

What is your favorite Metso Outotec value?

As a manager of a quite large team, my favorite Metso Outotec value is definitely Getting it done – together. Together for me means that if you don’t know something or are not sure how to proceed in a complicated situation, there is a low threshold to ask for help from colleagues and managers. Also, best practices are always shared with others to ensure efficient way of working for all.

I’m a firm believer that dedication and hard work always gets noticed.

What are your biggest career achievements?

I’m proud that I was able to do both my bachelor’s and master’s thesis for a company and both were implemented in practice as well. I’m also proud to have graduated on time from university with excellent grades and stipend even though I was also working at the same time most of the time. Getting a manager position only half a year after my graduation also feels like a big achievement.

What do you do in your spare time?

Recently I became a father to our first-born child. Now, most of the spare time is spent with taking care and spending time with him. Other than that, I’m very deeply dedicated to powerlifting which means I spent most of my extra spare time hours in the gym lifting weights.

What is your motto?

Hard work pays off. I’m a firm believer that dedication and hard work always gets noticed.
